Super Scale Grand Prix Malaysia 2010 Round 1
Date: Jan 16, 2010 (Saturday)
Venue: Subang Speedway SS19
Classes: Endurance
Organisers: Hobby Haven
Motors allowed: Handout Yokomo 48-turn
Gearing limits: none
Tires: open

When I first heard about this race, my exact words were "48 turns? That's a crawler motor!"

The SSGP is basically a spec race series based on 1/10th scale touring car chassis, realistic body shells, and standardised Yokomo 48-turn motors. In my experience, using high turn motors and then gearing down (up?) to gain back speed results in very high temperatures and burnt motor brushes, but that's basically what everyone does in this race. Still, it sounded interesting so I had to see it for myself.

The first round of the race is a 3-hour twilight endurance format with each team consisting of 3 drivers (sharing 1 car). Each car is required to have LED headlights installed, which are turned on when the sun goes down.

11. Team Hang Lipo - Danny, Epen and Ezme - Tamiya TA05

A fun time was had by all. The cars were the right speeds for spec racing, the body shells were interesting and the tires hadn't even worned to the seams yet. As for the motors, I couldn't have been more wrong about them. They were barely warm after three hours of non-stop racing. I think I'll sign up for the next round.
